Does Your Auto Insurance Cover Road Rage Incidents?

Every driver, including yourself, should prioritize safe and responsible behavior. However, as humans, we’re often prone to letting our emotions get the best of us. These situations can be particularly problematic in already risky situations, such as while you’re behind the wheel. Road rage poses a significant danger to you, your passengers, and everyone you share the road with. Furthermore, you may be at even greater financial risk than you think.

Will My Policy Pay Out for Losses Related to Road Rage?

Generally, you should not expect your auto insurance to cover losses following road rage incidents. Many policies explicitly exempt these situations from your coverage, meaning you’d be responsible for paying for repairs and liabilities out of pocket, potentially incurring devastating financial consequences. Road rage-related losses are often not classified as accidental but rather a result of intentionally risky or even criminal behavior.

What If Someone Else’s Road Rage Causes an Accident?

If another party perpetrates road rage and subsequently causes you bodily harm or property damage, your insurance may render aid, but coverage can still be complicated. Typically, in an incident for which someone else is to blame, you could rely on their third-party liability coverage to pay out and assist with your losses. However, this may not occur since road rage is often excluded from coverage.

Instead, you may need to rely on uninsured motorist coverage to assist with your losses. This part of an auto policy can pay out if you’re involved in an incident with someone who lacks adequate insurance. Since the liable party’s coverage is inapplicable to these damages, they may be considered uninsured. Subsequently, you may need to file a claim against your uninsured motorist coverage. Alternatively, you could seek compensation through other means, such as by filing a lawsuit.
